ORANGEBURG, S.C. — An 18-year-old woman, identified as Jaliyah Butler, was tragically shot and killed over the weekend on the campus of South Carolina State University (SCSU).
Authorities confirmed that Butler, who was not enrolled at the university but was visiting as a guest, succumbed to her injuries late Saturday night at MUSC Health Orangeburg.
The incident unfolded amid homecoming celebrations, a time when the campus was crowded with students, alumni, and visitors. According to police, Butler was struck during one of two separate shootings that occurred hours apart. Investigators currently believe the incidents were unrelated.
SCSU President Alexander Conyers expressed heartbreak over the tragedy, describing Butler’s death as “a devastating loss for her loved ones and the entire university community.” He added that counseling services have been made available for students and staff, and pledged the university’s full cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
Friends and family remember Jaliyah as a kind and vibrant young woman who had a promising future ahead of her. She had traveled to the university to celebrate with friends — a joyful visit that ended in unimaginable loss.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Orangeburg Department of Public Safety or Crime Stoppers.
