17-Year-Old DC Student Among Nation’s Youngest Black Pilots, Aspires to Fly Military Aircraft

A Washington, D.C. student is making waves by becoming one of the youngest Black pilots in the country.

Christopher Ballinger achieved his pilot’s license last week upon completion of the Air Force Junior ROTC Flight Academy Program.

Out of thousands of applicants, Ballinger was chosen as one of the few to partake in the intensive eight-week summer program. His passion for flying and desire to explore new horizons drove him to seize this opportunity.

“I’ve harbored this interest for quite some time,” Ballinger reveals. “It felt like a calling.”

The program demanded early mornings, rigorous written and flying assessments, with Ballinger logging a total of 55 hours in the skies.

“I feel a sense of relief that I’ve accomplished this,” Ballinger shares.

As he looks towards his future, the soon-to-be senior at Sidwell Friends School is considering admission to the Air Force academy. His advice to fellow students? “Embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Even if it seems daunting initially, the rewards will be worth it in the end.”

With aspirations to serve in the Air Force and pilot military aircraft while exploring the world, Ballinger is poised for an exciting journey ahead.
