Who is Emory Tate?
Emory Andrew Tate Jr. was born on December 27, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois, to his father, Emory Andrew Tate I, an attorney, and his mother, Emma Cox Tate.
As a child, Emory developed a keen interest in chess, a passion that would propel him to great success in the future.
He rose to prominence in the chess community, achieving notable victories such as winning the Indiana State championships six times, the United States Armed Forces Chess Championship five times, and the Alabama state championship once in 2010.
Maurice Ashley, the first black chess grandmaster in history, hailed Emory as a “trailblazer for African-American chess.”
Known for his daring gameplay, Emory gained a reputation as a risk-taker, defeating 80 grandmasters in tournament games.

Emory achieved a peak International Chess Federation ranking of 2413 in 2006, making him the 72nd seeded chess player in the US.
