LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Entertainment is set to produce a documentary focused on the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, one of the worst acts of racism-fueled violence in American history.
It was 99 years ago that a group of white rioters in Tulsa destroyed the city’s black community, one of the wealthiest black neighborhoods in the United States, known as “Black Wall Street.”
At the time, 36 deaths were reported. However, historians have said that number is likely closer to 300.
“The Tulsa Race Massacre is not just a black story but American history,” wrote director Salima Koroma, who will helm the project, on Twitter. “The fabric of this country is soaked in racism and today 99 years later, we’re still fighting for change,” she wrote. “That’s why I’m partnering with SpringHill Entertainment to tell the story of Black Wall Street.”
