First all-black golf team to win Georgia state title gets their championship rings

The Drew Charter School golf team’s achievement gained national attention and made their entire community proud.  Not only had their players achieved the title of 2019 State Champions, but the team also became the first all-black team to do so.  On Tuesday, they reaped the rewards of their win, gaining championship rings.

“It was a dream come true,” said Anthony Ford, a captain on the winning team. “We had been working hard way before the season even started, and we just got led in the right direction by our coaches and our peers and our support group is huge.”

On Tuesday, the team rallied with excitement as they received their state championship rings.

“It was just an incredible experience to be able to lead this team to make history,” said Coach Joe Weems. The students helped design their rings.
